The electricity running your dishwasher at 2 PM may not cost the same as running it at 7 PM. Most homeowners have never looked at the few lines on their bill that explain why.

Chapter One

Same electricity. Different price.

The electricity running your dishwasher at 2 PM may not cost the same as running it at 7 PM. Same house, same appliance, same amount of power — a different price on the meter.

Most utilities in the U.S. now offer, or default customers into, time-of-use rate plans — pricing that changes by the hour rather than staying flat all day. The U.S. Energy Information Administration tracks how widespread this has become, if you want to see it for yourself rather than take our word for it.

Chapter Two

The number you've probably never looked at

Most homeowners read one number on their electric bill: the total. Buried a page or two in, on the actual rate plan, are a handful of lines that explain why that total is what it is.

Below is a genuinely typical statement layout — the noise every real bill carries: account numbers, usage charts, fee breakdowns. Somewhere in there are exactly four things worth your attention.

Find your expensive hours

Not abstract advice — here's exactly where to look. This is a generic illustrative example, not real billing data.

The moves that actually matter

Not everything is worth changing. Here's where to actually start.

Chapter Seven

What if your biggest loads can't move?

You don't have to reorganize your life. Start with one or two loads you can actually move — laundry, the dishwasher, an EV charge schedule — and leave the rest alone.

Maybe the AC genuinely needs to run at 6 PM. Maybe the refrigerator doesn't care what the utility's rate schedule says. Maybe family dinner happens during peak hours because that's when your family is home. That's fine — changing behavior is one home-energy strategy, not the only one.
